The fish salting factory at Almuñécar was built by the Phoenicians to salt fish for export and was later expanded by the Romans. It is at the foot of the hill where Castillo de San Miguel is located and is located in El Majuelo park. The ancient factory was discovered during an archaeological excavation in 1970. It is one of the main attractions of Almuñecar.
